IB Middle Years Programme
The Laguna Creek Region Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a partnership between Harriet Eddy Middle School (HEMS) and Laguna Creek High School (LCHS). The MYP is part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum designed for children 11-16. The Laguna Creek Region MYP includes students in seventh and eighth grades at HEMS and ninth and tenth grades at LCHS.
The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self, and responsibility in their community. To fulfil the IB’s requirements, students at HEMS enroll in courses from each of the following eight subject areas: Language and Literature (English), Language Acquisition (World Languages), Individuals and Societies (History), Mathematics, Sciences, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. Through these eight subject areas, students engage in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning. The MYP emphasizes a student-centered curriculum model that includes inquiry and concept-based learning within a global context. The MYP also focuses on skills development through the Approaches to Learning (ATL) and fosters the development of a well-rounded citizen of the world through the IB Learner Profile.
The culminating experience of the MYP is the Personal Project completed in 10th grade. Following student reflection and self-directed investigation, students create a significant body of work over an extended period of time that demonstrates the skills and knowledge developed throughout the programme. This accomplishment is acknowledged by a notation on the student’s transcript and other special recognition. The MYP also provides the foundation necessary for successful completion of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in 11th and 12th grades at LCHS. The IB DP is recognized and respected by the world’s leading universities, and evidence suggests that higher rates of DP students go on to university and higher education study than non-IB students. Additionally, many colleges and universities grant course credit for DP courses. The opportunities provided by the these IB programs help to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students.
