Principal's Message

July 2022
It is my pleasure to serve our exceptional students, parent community, and staff, and welcome you to Harriet Eddy Middle School. We e that your child is as eager to start this new school year as we are. Our staff strive to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students. This is accomplished through our collective commitments of High-Quality Instruction, Collaborative Culture, and Community Involvement.

We are proud of our International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) educational experience. Information regarding ur IB MYP implementation is located on the IB Program page on our website. I would also encourage you to visit our Vision page to learn more about Eddy’s Initiatives and commitments on providing an Exceptional Educational Experience for all students. Our web address is hems.egusd.net where you can find a variety of information including information on Parent and Student VUE. We are happy to answer any questions you may have pertaining to Parent VUE during our “Night at the Nest” on August 10th starting at 5:30pm. We also frequently post on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/HarrietEddyMS/. This venue is used for our events and activities.

This marks my 15th year in education. Proudly, this will be my fifth year serving as an administrator at HEMS. As an advocate for students, first and foremost, my greatest priority is to ensure all students have learning opportunities that are equitable and are facilitated in a safe environment. This includes practices that nurture their physical, mental, and social well-being. In addition to providing students with high quality classroom instruction, we strive to impart to all students a deep understanding of our three school guidelines: *Be Safe *Be Respectful *Be Responsible. These three words serve as the foundation upon which our work is
built upon to foster positive student behavior and attitude.

The Eddy family is composed of teachers, administrators, classified, and support staff who are all vested in student success and wellbeing. Middle school is an exciting time in the lives of students and marks an important transition into a period of life that is characterized by accelerated physical, intellectual, social, and emotional changes. We endeavor to provide a supportive community where students feel like they belong and are safe to mature into the very best global citizens they can be.

To help facilitate community dialogue, I would like to invite you to “Good Mornings with Gillis” on the first Thursday of each month starting at 8:30 am. We will meet to discuss educational issues important to you. Light food and coffee are provided. This is an informal drop-in time for you as parents to have a voice at Harriet Eddy. Please stop in to pick up a muffin and coffee before heading off to start your day.

As a reminder, we will be hosting our annual “Night at the Nest” event starting at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, August 10. The first day of school is Thursday, August 11. We will be on an “All” bell schedule for August 11, 12, and 15. Dismissal is at 3:20 pm. I look forward to another great year at Harriet Eddy Middle School.

In partnership,
C Norma Gillis
